The bsic equipment required in the game of table tennis is the tennis racket. Known by various names as paddles in US or bats in UK, the official term that is used is table tennis racket. The term
"racket" and "paddle" are synonymous.
The table tennis racket is made from laminated wood. There is the flat and rigid wooden blade which incorporates the handle. The blade is covered with rubber on one or both sides.
One can
purchase pre-assembled "rackets" that have the rubber sheet
already on the blade. There are many choices for all levels of players
in pre-assembled blades that are approved for tournament play.
One can also create a table tennis custom rackets and choose blade and
rubber sheet combinations that suits the style of one's play, the level
of the game and playing abilities.
Types of Racquets/ Rackets or Paddles
- Recreational Paddles
Recreational paddles are made of wood and rubber combination that
are significantly lower in speed and spin producing capability than
the powerful "hi performance" custom paddle category of
products. Recreational level rackets are bought with rubber sheets
and wood (blades) of good to moderate performance.
- Hi-Performance Custom Paddles
This category of rackets is made of highly specialized,
hi-performance rubber and woods. These table tennis paddles or
rackets produce much more speed and spin than recreational rackets.
Hi-performance custom rackets are bought by selecting particular
specialized wood (or wood/graphite) along with hi-performance
rubber.
Table Tennis Blade
There are two styles of
blades.
- Western Style Blade: This style is for the western grip of the handle. This grip is same as shaking hands with another person and is also known as the shakehands grip. The racket handle is held in the palm of the hand so that the start of the racket head fits properly into the "V" shape formed by your thumb and first finger.
- Penhold Style Blade: In this style, the racket handle is held between the thumb and forefinger and is known as the penhold grip. This style is good for beginners.
Table Tennis Racket Handle

The shape of the racket handle depends on the players' choice. The most preferred one is the the flared handle. The anatomic handle takes the second position followed by the straight handle.
