A table tennis net is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the entire table tennis game. The table tennis game requires a hard table and a net.

Structure and Assembly

The net assembly consists of an Upright post, Height adjuster, Horizontal part of the net post and an Attaching clamp. The table tennis nets used can have either wider or narrower brackets. A wider table bracket will offer more stability of the net and post system itself and also can add stability to the table by holding the two halves together more securely. A narrower bracket has less stability and may not help table stability.

The material used are usually cotton or nylon table tennis nets. It has strong table clamps with felt pads. Micro adjustable height, heavy duty bracket & net, and light yet strong aluminum posts are the main features. The nets are weatherproof.

The net is actually an obstacle. So it should not increase the probability of a player gaining a lucky point. As a rule, when a player hits a ping pong ball at the top of the net, it should fall back on the hitter's side or bounce forwards. The ball shouldnot fall over onto the receiver's side. That is why the tension along the top of the net should be very very high than the rest of the net. That is why the fabric is suspended by a cord which must be tight and it must be attached only loosely to the posts.

Types of Table Tennis Nets

Universal Nets: They clamp directly onto any table top. They come with extra wide clamp openings which allow the nets to fit on thicker frame tables in the center area. These nets need to be removed before moving or storing the table.
Special Net and Post Sets: They can fit into specific roll-away style tables. They can be kept on the table during storage or roll-away position but they offer less adjustability.
Tournament Approved Table Tennis Net Sets: They are the most widely used net by professionals and learners. They are 72-inches long, having features like adjustable net height, a cord through the top of the net with adjustable tension, and 6-inch extension beyond the side of the table.
Recreational Table Tennis Nets: They are used for fun purpose at home and used by those who are play table tennis jsut as a hobby or past time. They do not have all the features of tournament nets. They use thinner, lighter bracket materials. Such nets are not recommended for repeated removal and installation on the table.
