The origin of the game Cricket evolved from a Scottish sport known as "cat-and-dog" and also a 13th century time pass game called "hand in and hand out". The game which is played today has its origin in the South Eastern part of England. It gradually became a popular sport in the second half of the 17th century. By the end of the 18th century, the game became the the national sport of England. The expansion and growth and of the British Empire led to cricket game being played in various areas of the British Empire. The first international matches were being held by mid-19th century. The cricket game became an International game with the formation of the Imperial Cricket Conference (I.C.C) in 1909. The I.C.C membership was originally confined only to the British Commonwealth countries. In 1956, the name of Imperial Cricket Conference was changed to International Cricket Council (ICC). Today, ICC has 104 member countries. Cricket is considered the world's second most popular sport after Association football.
