Hammer is a metal ball used for throwing in the athletic event 'hammer throw'. The hammer is attached to a long handle (straight or curved) through a spring steel wire (maximum length 4ft or 1.22m). Like other throwing events, one who throws the hammer to the farthest distance win the event.

Historical Facts :
The name hammer throw originated from older competitions, in which actual hammers were thrown. This game developed centuries ago in the British Isles. Since then it has been a regular event in track and field events. It was included in Olympics in 1900. But for women it started only in 2000 in Sydney Olympics.

Technical Facts:
Competitors gain maximum distance by winding the hammer, around their heads to set up the start of turns. Then they take three or four turns in the circle to attain maximum velocity. The two most important points for long throw are speed of the ball and angle of release.
