Hammer is a metal ball used for
throwing in the athletic event 'hammer throw'. The hammer is attached to
a long handle (straight or curved) through a spring steel wire (maximum
length 4ft or 1.22m). Like other throwing events, one who throws the
hammer to the farthest distance win the event.
Historical Facts :
The name hammer throw originated from older competitions, in which
actual hammers were thrown. This game developed centuries ago in the
British Isles. Since then it has been a regular event in track and field
events. It was included in Olympics in 1900. But for women it started
only in 2000 in Sydney Olympics.
