Discus is a heavy lenticular disc used to throw in athletics throwing
event (discus throw). A discus is thicker at the center than perimeter.
Discus is thrown by creating a whirling movement made by the athlete
within a circle of 8.2 ft (2.5 m) in diameter. Materials
A wide range of materials are used to make discus. Generally a metal rim and a metal core is used to gain the weight. The main materials in use are :
- Plastic
- Aluminum
- Wood
- Rubber
The discus has different weight and diameter for men and women.

Different Types Of Discus :
High Spin Discus
High spin discus is for above average throwers who generate a great deal of speed and spin when releasing the discus. Its rim weighs between 75%-80% and can be used in all wind conditions.
Very High Spin Discus
With the rim weighing between 80-90%, very high spin discus is best for throwers who generate a great deal of speed and spin when they release the discus. Most effective when wind conditions are favorable.
Center Weighted Discus
Center weighted discus is specially useful for beginner throwers. It is of the following types:
- Wood Discus with Wood Side Plates & Steel Rim.
- Rubber Discus made of Solid Rubber.
Training Discus is used by all throwers to improve their technique, strength and speed. These are great tools and should be used by all level throwers.
Buying Tips :
- Size of palm differ from person to person. So choose the discus
which fits perfectly in your palm grip.
- If you are a starter then buy light weight discus for initial practice and gradually move to heavier ones.
