June 28, 2010-To make a proper choice of the baseball bat is very essential to make the right hit and win the game of baseball. The weight, size, structure play a vital role in the player's performance. A bad choice can throw off a player's rhythm and sense of timing.
Ask yourself or your coach or your league's commissioner these questions:
- Do you know the rules of the game?
- In which league are you playin
- What type of bat you use: wood or metal ?
- What is the size of the barrel of the bat ?
- How big the bat barrel should be?
- Is there a certain connection between the weight of the bat and the length ?
- What should be its ratio?
We give below several points to consider before purchasing a
baseball bat:
- Know your budget. Expensive bats not necessarily improve your performance or replace hard work and practice. You can still purchase a high quality bat that meets your needs as a player
- Modern technology has today compelled bat manufacturers to turn baseball bats into lightweight trampolines. Most bats today have micro-thin walls that produce a trampoline-like effect, while increasing the bat speed. The only drawback here is that dents are formed in the bats after prolonged use. However this takes place after a period of time.
- Try some strokes using the bat in the store itself. Feel the bat. There is no such rule to measure what the right size baseball bat is best for you. It is more like which bat makes you feel comfortable.
- Consider the weight of the baseball bat. A baseball bat should be light and the bat speed generates power.
- Consider the length of the baseball bat. Often players choose a long bat, specially the young ones. A big long bat would however make hitting a baseball very hard for young players. Control and comfort while holding bat should be considered.
- Grip the bottom part of the handle with just one hand. Hold the bat directly in front of you, use just your fingers and lift the bat 8-10 times using only your wrist. If you have to bend your arm/elbow in order to lift the bat, then it is better that you select a lighter bat.
- Buy the baseball bat for one season only. Many think that it is better to buy a bat that lasts for a long period of time. This is no doubt a logical suggestion but the problem is that for a young player, hitting a moving object hurled at you is not easy and many times it compels the young player to quit. Buy for the now and practice so that you get the best chance for success.
