Netball Equipment: The Essentials

May 24, 2010- Netball was a game originally invented on the lines of basketball by the 19th century women. Though the game was initially a copy of basketball but eventually it evolved into a unique game with different rules and strategies.


One of the most important pieces of netball equipments is the ball. The size of ball varies according to the age and physique of the players. Players in the age group of 8 -10 years are officially supposed to play with size 4 ball while the older lot has to play with size 5 ball. Besides, the ball sizes and weight vary for certain specific reasons too, for example pass training balls can be heavier than the normal ones as it helps in strengthening the wrists and improving the passing ability as well.

The next most important components among the netball equipments are the goal posts. Like many other ball games, here also, there are two goal rings, one each on either side of the court. Each of the goal post has rings and nets attached to the top of it. Again, the goal post height varies as per the senior and junior level of players. Junior players are set to play against a 2.4 meters high goal post while the older players are supposed to play against a 3.05 meters high goal post. Generally, the goal posts are erected at a set place with fixed sockets but now-a-days free-standing and wheel-away goal posts are also available in the markets.

Netball is a team driven game where passing skills are extremely crucial. The seven players of each side are assigned with a particular section of the court. Hence the players have an identification mark to differentiate from one another. Generally bib are used for this purpose and make form an important part of the netball equipments. There are two sets of bib in two different colors. Each bib carries identification marks to differentiate the players amongst one another. Besides, these basic things there are other essentials too like netball shoes, protective shorts, or personal training gear.
